The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (STNJ), originally called the "New Jersey Shakespeare Festival,” is one of the leading Shakespeare theatres in the nation. We serve approximately 75,000 adults and children annually. It is New Jersey's only professional theatre company dedicated solely to Shakespeare's canon and other classic masterworks. The company strives to illuminate the universal and lasting relevance of the classics for contemporary audiences. We do this through our productions and education programs.
The annual Main Stage season, presented in the intimate, state-of-the-art F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre in Madison, runs May through December. TSNJ also presents an Outdoor Stage production each summer at The Greek Theatre. This location is an open-air amphitheater located on the College of Saint Elizabeth campus in nearby Florham Park.
The institution's staff of nearly 30 full-time employees works year-round to produce the company's performance season, educational programming, various other special events, and fundraising and marketing campaigns. Each year, STNJ works with over 200 artists and students during the course of the season. STNJ also works with these individuals through its various Main Stage, Outdoor Stage and touring productions. The cast and crew play to approximately 75,000 audience members each year. Through non-traditional casting and significant outreach efforts, the Theatre continues to build a culturally and geographically diverse audience.
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey Mission Statement
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s mission is two-fold: to bring new, relevant life to the world’s classics for a diverse audience; and also to use those masterworks to provide transformative experiences on stage and in classrooms. As a teaching theatre, the company is dedicated to using the classics as interdisciplinary teaching tools for artist training and arts education.
