New Jersey is preparing for an unusually busy tourism year in 2026 as it cohosts the FIFA World Cup with New York while also marking the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding with a yearlong slate of historical commemorations across the state.
Eight World Cup matches, including the tournament final, are scheduled for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, drawing international visitors throughout the summer. At the same time, communities statewide are planning reenactments, festivals, performances and public programs highlighting New Jersey’s role as a central battleground of the American Revolution.
State officials say the overlapping milestones allow New Jersey to showcase both its global profile and its deep historical roots, from international soccer in the Meadowlands to Revolutionary‑era sites and events across all 21 counties.
“In 1776, New Jersey was the crossroads of the American Revolution,” Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell said in a press release. “Now, as a cohost of the World Cup, New Jersey is becoming a crossroads of the world.”
