Historical Significance

Washington Township has a rich history that transports visitors back in time as they explore its storied past.

In fact, driving into German Valley Square from Middle Valley, one can witness the remnants of early settlements along the South Branch of the Raritan River, originally named “Long Valley” by the Lenni Lenape. In the mid-1700s, this area saw the formation of Upper Valley, German Valley, Middle Valley, and Lower Valley settlements.

Initially called Budd’s Valley, then Dutch Valley, the area was renamed German Valley in 1804. However, during World War I, anti-German sentiment led to its renaming once again to Long Valley. Historic buildings, such as the German Valley Hotel and the Obadiah La Tourette Grist and Saw Mill, stand testament to the area’s dynamic past.
